“A Pound Of Gruff”: Humpty’s Journal, Pg. 2
I like Humpty’s art style:)
If you are curious about our particular portrayal of Shylock, here is our inspiration: After discussing “The Merchant Of Venice” with my friend, Heather, she mentioned that the play is not a tragedy but a comedy. Shylock was actually portrayed in a humorous way in all his deviousness, as Jews were viewed as such back in the day for this play, I’m given to understand. So, to honor the nature of the play, I have re-envisioned him as an iconically, comically drawn bad guy: a combo of Oil Can Harry/Snidely Whiplash/Dick Dastardly. Yup. Showin’ my age;) Look ’em up if ya don’t know the reference. Historical and hysterical. Enjoy!
NOTE: The quote Humpty wrote on his journal says “Come in,” said the spider to the fly…
Great background/history information on that Shylock guy. If he’s the comedic villain of this adventure, then it’s going to be interesting to see how it turns out.
I can almost see Shylock ending up with a black eye or few bruises if he goes the comedic villain route and fails miserably at it.

Mighty Mouse, Dudley Do-Right, and Wacky Races/Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines, etc. Yep, I watched them all. (Dating myself here as well, but I watched Wacky Races on it’s first run in 1968.)
