Hi and welcome to Shards! As my first webcomic, and because I have absolutely no training in how to do comics, contents might shift during take-off but should settle down soon after flight.
This first strip is the cover, or “title page”. The comic Shards is currently not in color but does have either shading or hints of color where appropriate to the story. And if you were wondering, the two men featured above are Wilhelm and Jacob “Carl” Grimm, drawn based on likenesses I found online.
Shards is a saga that touches on the modern and the ancient tales and in doing so we tend to go back to the basics and research the original incarnations of the stories when possible. Yep, we picked up a book. For instance, “The Wizard Of Oz” by Frank Baum has Dorothy wearing silver slippers, not ruby slippers ( The ruby ones were added in the film to stand out tremendously and take full advantage of technicolor. True story! ). We like to use aspects of the original story because most people have either never seen it or it isn’t widely known and adds a twist to these well-known characters. We hope you enjoy Shards and follow along on this journey. And tell your friends about Shards.
So I’m the co-creator to this. I’ve been writing the story whilst Jade does the script. When I say I’m writing the story, what I’m actually saying is that I’m creating the scenario and several of my friends are giving me the actual outcome :).
Shards started as a role playing campaign based on the Mutants and Masterminds 2nd edition system. When D&D 4th edition came out I found a perfect opportunity to convert over to its system, and so far have been met with FANTASTIC success. I also have to point out that this whole thing was inspired by the author of “Something Positive”. Within his strip, he described a role-playing world which included only standard kids’ toys (He-Man, My Little Pony, Barbie, Lego etc.). This directly inspired our little trip into story land and I have to give credit where credit is due. Either way, go to his comic, read it, worship it, love it. Oh, and worship us, too.
So over these strips I’ll explain the actual gaming/story/reality of what is happening. We HATE plot holes in this house and will be attempting to plug every last one of them with glue known as research. If anyone is interested in the changes that I’ve made to the D&D 4th edition system to make this “Super Powered” campaign a success feel free to contact us.
Yes, that’s true. A lot of our friends have tried out the Shards campaign and they shall be forever immortalized by this strip. I’ll add that the prologues are not part of the campaign and the fleshing out of what happened during the role play sessions is strictly up to TB and myself. It’s fun being in a jam session with my husband trying to sort out how to convert the role play sessions into actual and continuous story and plot through the strips. I give him my thoughts, he gives me feedback on it, I keep the story in line. But trust me, even if people weren’t playing Shards, we’d have plenty of material to use for the comic.

Thanks for the Oz trivia gem. I like that kind of stuff because I think it does add new interest to old and familiar stories.

Very nice post!
A good start and one with a great take on the stories.
