Ahhh, the big reveal:) Introducing…. The Velveteen Rabbit! We call him Velvy;) I worked my butt off spending every last second of devoted Shards time to getting all this to you so I apologize that neither Cindy nor Goldie have their character pages up yet. Soon! Round abouts time of their actual official appearance in the comic, in fact. Velvy was just revealed early for the special reward for helping us get our 100 Facebook likes. I hope you enjoy him and check back over the next 3 Fridays or so for the rest of his prologue! Velvy is one of mine and TB’s favorite characters. He’s kind of innocent and unassuming, loyal and friendly to a fault, but there’s just… something… extremely off-putting about him which makes people run in fear.
Fact Note: I did research on period clothing from 1922, the year the original story was published, to get the clothes right of the boy’s mother and whomever she conscripted to burn her son’s toys.
Fiction Note: In the story of The Velveteen Rabbit, the rabbit wants to become real and to do so is told that he must be truly loved by his boy. The boy becomes ill, the toys are to be burned, and poor Velvy cries a tear as he’s being burned on the pile. I added that, but did not add the fairy who came and made him real at the end of the original tale. Obviously, if I did that, he wouldn’t be in the comic. I kinda feel sorry for him, not letting his story finish out. And… for reasons to come. Heh.
It’s actually random. Each time I recache the gravatars, it changes. I’m done for now. If you want one in particular, they are all up for grabbin’ to stick on your own gravatar account and use here, which I encourage if you like a particular character!
He’s here…directly inspired by our old cat. So cute, so cuddly, so full of love and loyalty. What more could you want from a best frient? Pick him up, hold him close, love him…I’ll be standing over here far, far away.
We’ll be posting Velveteen’s character sheet and powers soon after the 3rd or 4th prologue strip! I don’t want to give away what he can do until the story reveals itself :)! If you’re an avid site reader though you might be able to find some information on him somewhere in our links tree :)!
We’ll be role-playing Shards this Saturday. Its going to be a very special time for our man Jack. Last adventure poor Velveteen got sent home, our heroes met an interesting renegade, and with the help of David and Dorothy’s amazing new power, managed to drive off the Big Bad Wolf. Next time though he’ll bring some friends.
If by the story version he becomes a real rabbit, no. Velvy is considered a construct (like a golem or robot), just like Humpty is technically undead. Velvy has never been a real living creature in our version. In our version, he was tossed aside to be thrown out and burned, spurned by those who loved him. So begins his eternal quest to find someone else to love and accept him. There’s just one problem… :)
Oh, I wonder if he will sew his left eye somewhere else on his body / head?
For those wanting to keep a particular Gravatar, it is an easy process. Just create an account (or log into yours), Either upload the gravatar you saved to your omputer (or input the link to it when asked), and go through the crop page. Just finish, as the image is the correct size as is. If you want to use it with Facebook, as I have done with the Ace of Spade, it needs to be enlarged to 180 x 180. Facebook will then shrink it down to about the original size. Why they do that, I’ve no idea. :)
OH, and if anyone wants to visit Dorothy’s house, it is in Liberal, Kansas and has a number of items from the movie in a nice little museum. It is on US Highway 54. http://www.tabblo.com/studio/stories/view/232446/ (Yes, I was born in Kansas) Not too far away is the home town of the chap who played Doc on Gunsmoke.
Actually, Baum only did two stories that we have much to do with. Velveteen rabbit was written by Margery Williams, published in 1922. So, nope. The fact that it is in his left eye is completely random… except that I am left handed and see everything “leftified”. I sometimes have to go back and redraw some strips because most of the characters are right handed LOL

Oh, and there’s an Easter Egg in this strip. Can you find it? It appears in two panels.
I totally did not notice Rosebud until you mentioned it. XD
THAT DARN SLEDGE
YAY NEW CHARACTER!
You got the Velvy avatar! Yay for you!

So he’s not like the Velvy in the story, as he missed the ending ? :(

Nope, this is definitely not the Velveteen “gone real.” lol.
The “Velveteen horror” you two keep hinting at has me very very intrigued. :D
I already love Velvy! Mismatched eyes plus stitched rag toy is d’aaawwwww.
Is that the Shard in his left eye?
He is adorable in his own way, and yes, that is his shard:)

Thanks for the tutorial:) I was meaning to get to that! You saved me the trouble:)
Glad to help!

That’s awesome:)
I’m curious, did you pick the left eye of Velvy for the shard because Baum was left-handed? Or is it just a coincidence?

Ah, a fellow lefty!
I did know Baum didn’t write the Velveteen rabbit, but thought I’d ask about it. Sort of the obscure thing that sometimes happens. :)
VELVY! Yay! *puts on a hazmat suit to huggle him* I love the “thwap” sound effect. Seeing that panel just made me crack up. XD
