For those wondering, this type of strip is not going to be a “regular” thing. This strip was created because the next strip was REALLY confusing without it when we ran it by our trial group. We’re trying to emphasize a point on how reality can affect stories. As time passes stories change, and those changes can affect our world in very strange ways. You’ll be meeting at least 3 new main characters in this chapter. Including a very dysfunctional father/daughter duo!
I have to say that Jade sure does know how to turn a script into a story! She made this entire strip turn out better than I could have envisioned.
I would just like to say, that I really like the drawing style and the hands around the phone looks really great along with the papers flying about. :D
But what is that in the drawer she’s pulling open? A mirror and a lipstick?
It’s a mirror and a small vial with something a little exciting in it! Jade studied hands for hours before doing this strip. In fact she had me hold my cell phone to my ear for 5 minutes while she sketched this strip.
To add to TB’s explanation, I’ll included that the mythos that mirrors are kinds of portals — or at least doors — and that means they can link planes of existence. I envision the broken magic mirror being linked to any and all mirrors, including ones in reality. It is a theme used most famously in “Through The Looking Glass” but is common in a lot of period tales. The title of this strip, “A Catalyst”, is implying that something in reality here is affecting or going to affect something else later;)
Maloonster> As for the stuff in the vial… You’ll see next strip! The man in this strip doesn’t use the mirror to look at himself; but as primped as his hair looks, maybe he does at other times. And, yes, the hand looks pretty good. Thanks TB!
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

No matter what I try, this panel isn’t coming up for me. :(
